From October 6 to 12, 2026, between 9 a.m. and noon, LeConte Lodge services are closed during the flight windows. The shop, restrooms, water, and food service all stay unavailable. The trails on Mount Le Conte remain open, but you may face brief holds at three points while the rotations are active. Traffic is also disrupted on US-441 / Newfound Gap Road, near the Oconaluftee Overlook. The work is clearing debris from the recreation building that was torn down at the lodge. Where it started
Great Smoky Mountains Closes Newfound Gap Road Ahead of Hurricane Isaias
U.S. 441 and Balsam Mountain Campground have been closed since October 9, 2026, because of strong winds from Hurricane Isaias.
If you were planning to drive across the park in the next few days, change your plans now. U.S. 441, also known as Newfound Gap Road, has been closed since 8 p.m. on October 9, 2026. The call comes down to Hurricane Isaias, which is moving in with gusts expected to be strong along the ridgelines.
This isn't some minor side road. It's the backbone of the park, the one that links the Tennessee side to the North Carolina side by crossing the divide at Newfound Gap. When it closes, there's no shortcut. You have to go all the way around the mountains, which easily adds one to two hours to the drive.

The reason is simple and serious. Winds this strong bring down trees and throw branches across the pavement, in an area where the road winds through tight switchbacks under heavy forest cover. Driving through there during the storm means putting yourself under a falling tree with nowhere to go. The best thing you can do is put off your trip and wait for the park to announce the reopening.
The campground isn't spared either. Balsam Mountain Campground closed the same day, at 5 p.m. Perched high in the mountains, it's especially exposed to wind and weakened trees, and a night in a tent up there during something like this would be anything but smart. If you had a reservation, keep an eye on your messages. Refund or rebooking terms usually track how long the closure lasts.
There's no firm reopening date yet, which makes sense. It'll depend on the storm's track and how long it takes to clear the road. Before you head back up the mountain, check the status of access and services in our Great Smoky Mountains park guide, which we keep current as alerts come in. Pushing your trip back 48 hours will save you a long wait in front of a closed gate.
