Joshua Tree: Geology Tour Road Closed After Heavy Rain

Heavy rain flooded Joshua Tree's Geology Tour Road, which is now closed. Use caution on the rest of the park's roads.

By Jocelyn Pion,

If you're planning a trip to Joshua Tree in the next few days, here's something that changes your plans. The park got a significant amount of rain, and the runoff that followed left one of its dirt roads impassable. As a result, Geology Tour Road is closed for now while conditions settle.

This isn't your ordinary road. It's a geology touring route, popular with visitors who want to get up close to the rock formations and desert landscapes the park is known for. It normally calls for a capable vehicle, and current conditions only make it harder. So hold off on driving it while the closure is in effect, and don't try to slip past the barriers.

Flooding in the desert works in a way that catches a lot of first-time visitors off guard. Water doesn't soak into dry, hard-packed ground. It runs off fast and hard. A dirt road can get carved up with ruts, buried in mud, or washed out entirely in a matter of hours. That's exactly why the park's crews made the call.

The rest of the road network is still open, but use caution on every other road in the park. After rain like this, deep puddles, scattered gravel, or damaged stretches can linger even on pavement. Ease off the gas, keep your distance, and don't drive through any flooded section when you can't tell how deep it is.

To plan the rest of your trip around this, lean on the Joshua Tree park guide, which lays out the areas and roads worth knowing before you go. And if Joshua Tree is part of a bigger trip, take a look at our road trip itinerary that runs through the park to map out your stops with some flexibility built in. A closed road doesn't ruin a trip. It just means shifting one goal and keeping an eye on the reopening before you put Geology Tour Road back on the schedule.
