Mineral King Road Construction: Closures and Delays to Expect in Sequoia

Daytime closures and traffic delays are hitting Mineral King Road right now. Plan ahead for your trip into this remote corner of Sequoia.

By Jocelyn Pion,

If you're planning a trip out to the Mineral King area, there's one thing worth checking before you head out. Construction is underway on Mineral King Road, with temporary daytime closures and traffic delays. Nothing alarming, but enough to throw off a tight schedule if you show up at the wrong time.

This little stretch of road has a reputation. Narrow, winding, and full of tight switchbacks, it climbs toward one of the wildest, least-visited corners of the park. People come for the high-country meadows, the granite peaks, and some superb hiking trails, far from the crowds of Giant Forest. The drive is slow by nature. Add a construction zone, and your travel time can climb fast.

In practice, the closures and delays don't block access all the time, but they follow a rhythm that shifts from day to day. The park keeps an up-to-date schedule of the affected windows on its road construction page. Before you leave, the reflex is simple. Check the day's schedule to time your drive and skip the wait at the work zone.

Here's our advice: aim to drive through early in the morning, build in a comfortable cushion of time, and don't count on stacking a perfectly timed run of stops into one day. Mineral King rewards people who take their time, not the ones who rush. Think about gas, water, and food too, because services are scarce once you're on this road.

To place this area within the park as a whole and plan the rest of your trip, lean on our Sequoia & Kings Canyon park guide. And if this stop is part of a longer journey, it fits naturally into our road trip itinerary through the park. A little planning, and Mineral King Road stays a pure pleasure.
