Yellowstone Logs 868,450 Visits in September 2026 as Roads Close Soon
In September 2026, Yellowstone logged 868,450 visits, up 3% year over year, and most of its roads close on November 1.
Yellowstone's shoulder season is no longer quiet. According to Buckrail - Jackson Hole, the park logged 868,450 visits in September 2026, up 3% from September 2025 (839,579 entries). That's still short of the all-time September record of 882,078 visits, set in September 2021, but it confirms a trend we've been tracking for several seasons. September has become a full-blown peak season now, a far cry from the lull it used to be.
Here's what that means in practice. If you're aiming for late summer or the very start of fall, expect the same crowds you'd see in July and August. Lines at the entrances, full parking lots at the most popular sites, lodging booked far in advance. We'd suggest heading out early in the morning or late in the day, and booking your room as soon as you can. To plan it all out, the Yellowstone park guide breaks down which areas to prioritize by season.

Over the full year, the picture is more mixed. Again according to Buckrail - Jackson Hole, the January-through-September 2026 total reached 4,360,300 visits, a slight 1% dip from the same period in 2025 (4,387,546 visits). In other words, the season is concentrating into a few busy months rather than spreading across the year.
Here's the key thing to keep in mind as you plan your trip. Most of the park's interior roads close on November 1, 2026. The last weeks of October stay open, with fall color and thinning crowds, but the window is short. Once that date passes, driving access to the heart of the park drops off sharply until it reopens in spring. Aim for October to enjoy the park without the crowds, and wrap up your itinerary before November 1.
